Following a state funeral attended by family and members of Congress, thousands of public mourners were seen entering the United States Capitol to see his casket and receive greetings from his widow, Maya Rockeymoore-Cummings. His coffin left the United States Capitol around 8:35 p.m. Cummings’ official funeral was held on October 25, 2019, at the New Psalmist Baptist Church in Baltimore. Former Presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, former Vice President Joe Biden, as well as Nancy Pelosi, John Lewis, Amy Klobuchar, Elizabeth Warren, and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, were all present.

In June 2011, his nephew Christopher Cummings, son of his brother James, was murdered at his off-campus house near Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia, where he was a student. Cummings had surgery to repair his aortic valve in May 2017 and was out of the office for two months. In July 2017, he developed a surgery-related infection but returned to work.

Cummings was later admitted to the hospital with a knee infection. In 1994, while serving in the Maryland House of Delegates, he was diagnosed with thymic carcinoma, a rare form of cancer. Cummings had cancer for 25 years, it was revealed in November 2019, though the cause of death was not stated.
