Aloe Vera, a short-stemmed shrub, is sometimes described as a “wonder plant”. Aloe is a group that comprises more than 500 species of blossoming succulent plants. Many Aloes occur in North Africa naturally. The leaves of Aloe Vera are erect, succulent, and are arranged as a dense rosette. The gel obtained from the plant's leaves serves many uses in the day-to-day life of many people.

A lot of scientific study over the last few years has been conducted on Aloe Vera regarding several claimed therapeutic properties. We will study some of the advantages of Aloe Vera in the details below.

About Aloe Vera-

Aloe Vera gel has numerous medicinal properties and is frequently used in creams and lotions. Aloe Vera has been used for centuries and is currently more popular than ever according to Kew Gardens, England's royal botanical center of excellence. The plants of Aloe Vera are nurtured worldwide, primarily as a crop for "Aloe gel," which comes from the leaf.

Aloe Vera is nowadays widely used in:

  • Food – Aloe Vera is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as a flavoring.
  • Food supplements.
  • Herbal remedies.

The record of human use for Aloe Vera in the earliest times comes from the Ebers Papyrus (an Egyptian medical record) from the16th century BC. According to a study published in the Indian Journal of Dermatology, they called Aloe Vera "that plant of immortality" in ancient Egypt. The authors of the journal also stated that the plant has been used therapeutically for many centuries in China, India, Greece, Egypt, Mexico, and Japan.

What are the benefits of Aloe Vera?

The medicinal claims made about Aloe Vera, as with many other plants and herbs, are limitless. Some are backed by severe scientific researches while some others are not. We will focus mainly on those that are backed by scientific studies.

1. Teeth and gums

A study that was published in General Dentistry, reported that Aloe Vera in tooth gels works as effectively as toothpaste in fighting cavities.

In the research, Aloe Vera gel was compared to the germ-fighting ability of two popular toothpastes. It was found that the gel was just as good, and in some cases even better than the sought-after toothpastes at controlling cavity-causing oral bacteria.

The authors of the research explained that the latex in Aloe contains anthraquinones, compounds that actively heal and reduce pain through natural anti-inflammatory properties.

The scientists, however also warned that not all Aloe gels they analyzed contained the proper form of Aloe Vera - they must contain the even out gel that is present in the center of the plant to be effective.

2. Constipation

The use of Aloe Vera for the treatment of constipation was approved by Germany's regulatory agency for herbs. Dosages of 50-200 milligrams of Aloe latex approved by Commission E are commonly taken in liquid or capsule form once daily for up to ten days.

However, it was stated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2002 that there is not enough data on the safety and effectiveness of Aloe products; so, in the U.S., they cannot be sold to treat constipation.

3. Diabetes-induced foot ulcers

A study that was carried out at the Sinhgad College of Pharmacy, India, and was later published in the International Wound Journal made observations at Aloe's ability to treat ulcers.

It was reported that a gel formed with carbopol 974p (1 percent) and Aloe Vera, together promote substantial wound healing and closure in diabetic rats in comparison to the commercial product and provides a favorable product to be used in diabetes-induced foot ulcers.

4. Depression, learning, and memory - an animal experiment

A study that was published in Nutritional Neuros cience established that Aloe Vera reduced depression and improved memory in mice.

After carrying out trials on laboratory mice, they came to the conclusion that Aloe Vera improves learning and memory, and also eases depression in mice.

More studies are required to establish if humans might also receive the same benefits as mice.

5. Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)

A randomized human trial carried out at St. George's Hospital Medical School, London, United Kingdom examined Aloe and IBS. Their results were issued in the International Journal of Clinical Practice. Participants with IBS were given either placebo or Aloe Vera. After three months, there were no noteworthy differences in symptoms of diarrhea.

However, the researchers wrote:

"There was no evidence that Aloe Vera benefits patients with IBS. However, we could not rule out the possibility that improvement occurred in patients with diarrhea or alternating Irritable bowel syndrome whilst taking Aloe Vera. Further investigations are warranted in patients with diarrhea-predominant Irritable bowel syndrome, in a less complex group of patients."
