RO vs UV, Which is Best for You ?

RO vs UV are two different technologies that are being compared in water purifiers these days. Market is full of different products same technology some costly some cheap. Customer gets confused in selecting what’s better for them and why there is so much price difference when same technology used everywhere. You might think that RO water purifiers are best, while this can be true if we only consider that it’s a high end technology, but still that doesn’t mean every home should use RO water purifier.

Water purifier selection should be based on the water supply that you receive in your area. Some water supplies that comes from clean rivers, lakes or other clean sources may have beneficial minerals and low TDS. Hence RO water purifiers will waste these important minerals which we could have naturally obtained from water.

Reverse osmosis or RO is a technology where water pressurized water is forced thru a semipermeable membrane with pores as small as 0.0001 micron. This process forces the high TDS water to come in low TDS range, and all impurities like chemicals, salts, fluoride, chlorine, bacteria, virus, germs etc. are removed. The water that we obtain from RO purifier after purification is soft water, great taste, no smell or color.

UV water purifiers are very simple and effective technology. These should be used in areas with low TDS and soft water. UV technology works by using an Ultra Violet lamp and running water through the UV chamber to kill all microbes like virus, bacteria and parasites. This UV radiation is sufficient for killing 100% microbes that pass thru the chamber.

This process requires very less electricity as low as 11 watts and can be used with an Inverter also. The drawback in most UV water purifiers is that the dead bodies of the microbes still remain in the treated water, so some water purifiers like Aquafresh RO use UF along with UV to clear out all the remnants of the microbes. But point to remember is that UV water purifiers are incapable of removing any other impurities from water.
